| Elf Lettuce Elf Lettuce is a hard-touring band whose music is as true to its early rock and blues roots as the band members are to their roots in the Midwest. Upon moving to Madison in 2006, the group quickly garnered the respect of their musical peers. This respect was perhaps most evident when Clyde Stubblefield, the original “funky” drummer for James Brown (and a myriad of other legendary artists), took notice of the group. The band now enjoys tenure as Clyde’s supporting act every Monday in addition to maintaining an average of 12-14 scheduled performances per month. Since their first show in 2004, Elf Lettuce has quickly established itself as a live music staple of the Upper Midwest. Fans that’ve experienced their concerts at the Feel Good Festival, Steel Bridge Songfest, Madison Harvest Festivals, The Copper Fountain Festival, and several other major Midwestern events will agree that the group’s sound is constantly evolving and the energy in their live shows is sonically contagious. Since the release of their eponymous debut EP in 2006, the band has distributed over 1,000 copies independently, and will commence work on their first full-length album in the winter of 2009. Elf Lettuce plays a wide variety of music. In their improvisationally-friendly performances, their rapidly growing fan base can detect a strong roots-rock and blues presence with overtones of bluegrass, country, folk, jazz, and funk-laden melodies. Guitarist Jacob Lison’s virtuosic playing can recall “slow hand” style picking, and in a split second, it can boil over into a tempest of fiery psychedelia. | Ken Wheaton Ken’s earliest recollections include singing along to the family’s Grundig radio-phonograph during the 60s while his Father was stationed in France. Along with his parents’ collection of jazz records, Ken heard the pop music broadcasts on Radio Luxembourg. When a neighbor sold him a Sears guitar for $15, Ken’s career as an instrumentalist began. Ken started playing professionally in high school. In the late 70s, he played with Clyde Stubblefield in Windows, and performed with Under the Table, opening for such acts as Tommy James and The Shondells and Gary “U.S.” Bonds. For the last 25 years, Ken has been leading his own groups and has developed an active career as a solo performer and songwriter, drawing on his interests in classical, jazz and contemporary music. He specializes in acoustic finger-style guitar, featured prominently on his CD Jessica’s Dreamin’. With his band, Ken plays his own songs, plus jazz and blues standards, and pop favorites from the 60s to the present. | Paul Cebar and The Milwaukeeans Paul Cebar cut his teeth musically in the coffeehouse folk scene of the mid-'70s in Milwaukee. First paying gigs took place in late '76 with an emphasis on solo recasting of small combo jump-blues and other early R&B. Upon graduation from New College in Sarasota, Florida, with a thesis addressing rhythm & blues varities featuring a hearty emphasis on Louis Jordan and Buddy Johnson, Cebar dedicated himself to trodding the boards in earnest and spent substantial amounts of time testing the waters out New York way while exploring band dynamics with a soul and New Orleans-minded crew called the R&B Cadets back home. The Cadets ranged about from 1980 to 1986 and featured the grand original tunes of John Sieger alongside the winning assortment of B sides and obscurities that were the fruits of Cebar's research. Concurrently, he kept alive the spark of his solo work with a small group which came to be known as The Milwaukeeans. Throughout the early 80s, this combo featured Rip Tenor on tenor sax, Alan Anderson on upright bass, Robyn Pluer on vocals and Paul on acoustic guitar and vocals, and drew most of its repertoire from '30s, '40s and '50s jazz and R&B. | Robert Allen Jr. Robert Allen Jr. is a powerhouse of blues guitar. He first picked up a guitar at the age of five. by his late teens Robert was touring nationally with blues bands. His travels in 1996 with the Sly Mississippi Gun took him to the crossroads, the place where as legend has it, Robert Johnson cut his deal with the devil. In 1997 his travels on the east coast with legendary Sam Lay (Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf) Brought him to the blues master Jimmy Rogers. Robert has been astounding audiences ever since. In 2001 he recieved the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) award for "blues group of the year" . Robert is currently working on his new CD and performing regionally with his band.
